A select group of students from CREC’s Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts had just earned college credit from UConn. Through a program called “Early Learning Education,” seventeen high school visual artists took a college level course designed by the university called “Drawing 1030.” The class is taught locally by their high school art teacher who in this case was Francine Gintoff. Teachers had to go through a strict screening process by the UConn art faculty and must teach the course according to UConn’s syllabus. Entry for the course is selective for both students and teaching staff requiring portfolio work from both the teacher and participating student’s work. Since the course does not cover color drawing, black and white samples within strict guidelines are only accepted. The final student work was submitted to Cora Lynn Deibler at UCONN who did an image showcase of the various pieces. All seventeen students received 3 college level credits from UConn. This is the first time the Academy has participated in the Early Learning Education program.
