Jazz students at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Half-Day Program spent the afternoon with recording artist and Academy Alum, Jimmy Greene. On December 21, 2022, music students at the Academy participated in a master class in jazz performance presented by Greene. Then a trio of our students performed a John Coltrane song, Mr. PC. They were joined by Jimmy who soloed on the song and played the melody. The session is one of many master class opportunities that enrich Academy students’ education throughout the year and introduce them to professional artists. Greene is no stranger to the Academy having graduated in 1993. He has since recorded several jazz albums including the Grammy-nominated “Beautiful Life,” celebrating his daughter Ana Grace’s life. He has also performed on over 75 jazz albums as a sideman, and has toured and/or recorded with Horace Silver, Ron Carter, Tom Harrell, Freddie Hubbard, Harry Connick, Jr., Avishai Cohen, Kenny Barron, Lewis Nash, Dee Dee Bridgewater, the New Jazz Composers Octet and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, among many others. Dr. James Jimmy Greene is Associate Professor of Music and Co-Coordinator of Jazz Studies at Western Connecticut State University, where he also teaches applied jazz saxophone, jazz improvisation, jazz combos, and jazz ensemble/jazz orchestra.
