Twenty junior and senior dancers from the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts attended the 2019 Regional High School Dance Festival at the University of Wisconsin Madison. From March 15-19, 2019, GHAA dancers joined over 600 students from high schools across the country to attend performances, workshops, and lectures from college faculty and professional artists. Most importantly, they had the opportunity to audition for some of the most prestigious college, university, and summer dance programs in the country.

Ten GHAA dancers were selected to attend auditions, and have received over 70 acceptances with more coming in by the day. Among the highlights, both seniors and juniors were accepted to dance programs at the Peabody Conservatory at the Johns Hopkins University, University of the Arts, University of Illinois, Columbia College, Cornell College, Goucher College, Texas Christian University, Perry Mansfield Performing Arts School, and the Bates College Dance Festival among many other wonderful universities.

The Academy was also honored to be one of only six schools selected to perform in the festival’s Gala Performance at the Wisconsin Union Theater. Our students performed Judy Dworin’s “My Body, My Body” a piece that finds three women, bound in body bags, gradually shed their old skin and reclaim their bodies to a rhythmic chant that twists their turns with humor and an edge. The piece was an enormous hit and received a standing ovation as well as accolades from many college recruiters in the audience!
