At NVA, Alicea-Ford will be heading “Teatro Pueblo Nuevo” which is their bilingual theater outreach. He will be working within the theater educational programs to ensure that Latinx voices are celebrated within NVA.

Senior Composition Concert 2020

Each year seniors in the Dance Department choreograph and produce a Senior Concert through their Senior Composition Class. Traditionally performed at the end of May, students were in the middle of creating their dance pieces when school let out due to Covid-19. Within a week, they put together a plan to shift their focus from the stage to video, from working together in the studio to working remotely from home. With many thanks to director Corrine Bates and video editor Andrew Reardon, we share the Dance Department’s Class of 2020’s Senior Concert.

Academy alumni and current faculty member Kathryn Pateric is the third place winner of the “Ultimate Online Cosplay Championship.” Her submission was of an Aes Sedai, a fictitious being from the fantasy novel “The Wheel of Time.” The design was of her own creative interpretation from research and descriptions from the novel.

Renowned singer David Sabella has done Broadway, Carnegie Hall, among many other endeavors. On May 13th and 14th, singers at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Half Day had the privilege to learn directly from him during a vocal masterclass. In front of individual computer screens, vocal students from grades 9-12 each took turns performing a piece of music for him while he listened from his personal New York vocal studio. “I see all of you joining me from your different bedrooms each uniquely decorated” Sabella said as spoke of the importance of personifying a song. “A really good song is one that can survive outside the show it came from.”

Fashion periodical WWD recently showcased the thesis of Academy Alumni Zoe Grinfield (class of 2016) who is graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Four student costume designers and two artist instructors are utilizing their talents to help provide masks for the medical community. Theater Design and Production students Jadyn Moore, Kaci-Ann Headley, Elizabeth Lopez, and Emily Feveilson have all volunteered their time at home in piecing together re-usable facemasks to be used by doctors and nurses at local facilities.

During the session, he is expected to talk about his personal experiences, give insight into the industry, and conduct group workshops and personal coaching to present Academy musical theater students.

GHAA Students Earn College Credit

A select group of students from CREC’s Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts had just earned college credit from UConn. Through a program called “Early Learning Education,” seventeen high school visual artists took a college level course designed by the university called “Drawing 1030.” The class is taught locally by their high school art teacher who in this case was Francine Gintoff. Teachers had to go through a strict screening process by the UConn art faculty and must teach the course according to UConn’s syllabus.

Theater Design Students See Profession in Action

Theater Design and Production students had a chance to see first hand their art form in action. On May 15, ten seniors took a train to New York City to witness a TV Show rehearsal and get a backstage tour of a Broadway show. The day started off with them attending a rehearsal for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. During that time, they watched as the director, producers, and Colbert himself rework jokes, rehearse various bits, and hold creative discussions on show content.

Eric Murphy, a half day Academy senior from Avon, has had his original work “Civil Procedure” accepted by The Katherine Hepburn Cultural Art Center (The Kate) in Old Saybrook . Murphy wrote Civil Procedure about a boy caught between his parents' desire to pursue a lawsuit against one of their neighbors.
