Music students at the CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts spent the first half of their afternoon watching a World War 2 era opera. On Tuesday, October 8, the Connecticut Lyric Opera presented, “Der Kaiser von Atlantis,” a German opera, written by Vikto Ullman with the libretto by Peter Kien. The piece was written while both of them were prisoners in a Nazi concentration camp. Both the composer and librettist were murdered while in captivity.  Their work however; was smuggled out by a survivor.

As part of Academy’s visiting artists program, The Connecticut Lyric Opera was invited to perform the piece to the music department. The performance, which is in one act and an hour in length, followed an intense question and answer period by the students.

Throughout the school year, the Academy presents workshops, master classes, and performances by visiting artist as part of the curriculum.
