GHAA Take Part in Breakdancing Shakespeare

Three students from The Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Half Day are performers in this summer’s Hartford Stage’s production of Breakdancing Shakespeare. Every summer, the Greater Hartford Arts Council selects high school students within the region to spend a six week period rehearsing, taking master classes as well as learn interviewing, networking, and resume skills.

Meet Little Ti Moune

An orphan washes up from sea and gets raised by two peasant. She later grows up to fall in love with a landowner’s son after his car crashes near the village. Her name is Ti Moune and she is the lead character in CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts High School spring musical, “Once On This Island.”

Broadway Against Bullying Recognizes Academy

he Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts is the winner of first runner up in the “Broadway Against Bullying” contest and will now have to travel to the Big Apple. Back in January, freshman and sophomores from the Academy’s musical theater department performed the charity single “I Have a Voice” for a video that was uploaded to contest’s YouTube account.

Courtesy of WNPR.org Hamilton – the box office smash hit – is in Hartford and one of the actors appearing in the show was actually a student at the Greater Hartford Academy Of The Arts. Connecticut actor Tre Frazier has returned to pay back his former school with a Hamilton “master class.” Frazier, who saw his very first musical on the Bushnell stage, has been spending his time working to find his groove as he rehearses for his debut.

Our Alumni always have a way of sharing their successes and giving back. Recently, musical theater alum Tré Frasier joined cast of the Angelica Tour of Hamilton. Now he wants to give back to the school that helped him on his path. On Tuesday, December 11, Tré will conduct a master class to musical theater students. During the session, he is expected to talk about his personal experiences, give insight into the industry, and conduct group workshops and personal coaching to present Academy musical theater students.

Local saxophonist, Mike Casey, Academy class of 2011, was recently featured in the Huffington Post regarding his passion for jazz music in the modern age. A year ago, Casey released his first album “The Sound of Surprise” and “Stay Surprising” which has been streamed over a million times on Spotify and other services.

GHAA Students Earn College Credit

A select group of students from CREC’s Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts had just earned college credit from UConn. Through a program called “Early Learning Education,” seventeen high school visual artists took a college level course designed by the university called “Drawing 1030.” The class is taught locally by their high school art teacher who in this case was Francine Gintoff. Teachers had to go through a strict screening process by the UConn art faculty and must teach the course according to UConn’s syllabus.

Theater Design Students See Profession in Action

Theater Design and Production students had a chance to see first hand their art form in action. On May 15, ten seniors took a train to New York City to witness a TV Show rehearsal and get a backstage tour of a Broadway show. The day started off with them attending a rehearsal for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. During that time, they watched as the director, producers, and Colbert himself rework jokes, rehearse various bits, and hold creative discussions on show content.

Actress, singer, and stand-up comedian Jackie Hoffman spent the day at the CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts. Hoffman, whose credits include Broadway, film, and television work-shopped with students from the musical theater department in one of many master classes offered by the Academy. A theater major from the CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts’ had recently gained recognition for an original piece of work. Eric Murphy, a half day Academy senior from Avon, has had his original work “Civil Procedure” accepted by The Katherine Hepburn Cultural Art Center (The Kate) in Old Saybrook . Murphy wrote Civil Procedure about a boy caught between his parents' desire to pursue a lawsuit against one of their neighbors.
