Choreographers ShowcaseThe CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Half Day program provides high school students from the capitol region and beyond an extensive training in the arts. Students who attend choose a concentration from a variety of  arts disciplines such as Theater, Visual Art, Music, Theater Design, Dance, and Musical Theater.  All classes are taught by professional Artist Instructors.  

We are the recipients of many awards including Best Arts Magnet School by the “Arts School Network” and School of  Distinction  from “Magnet Schools of America”

Jazz Ensemble The Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Half Day is the award winning program of the Capitol Region Education Council (CREC) serving families in and around the capitol region and beyond. We meet from 1-4:15 Mon-Thu. Tuition is covered by the state of Connecticut and transportation is provided by your child's home district.

All Prospective Student Open Houses are held at the Theater of the Performing Arts


Registration to the Academy is done through the Regional School Choice Office (RSCO) with acceptance by lottery. Anybody is welcome to apply. The lottery will open November 1, 2019.

$20 and $15 adults, $15 and $10 students/seniors

Choreographers’ Showcase is a rare opportunity for high school dancers to learn and perform with critically acclaimed choreographers. This year we welcome choreographers Kyle McHargh, Yoshito Sakuraba, Katie Stevinson Nollet, authorized stager Brandon Collwes for the Merce Cunningham Trust, and Alberto Del Saz from the Nikolais-Louis Foundation for Dance.

The Theater of the Performing Arts

Chorus Line The Theater of the Performing Arts houses a 600-seat, state-of-the-art proscenium theater, a 120-seat flexible theater, classrooms and support spaces. It provides a home for Academy performances and is also available to the community  for special events.

CT Lyric Opera
Opera Company; First Visiting Artist of the Year
Music students at the CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts spent the first half of their afternoon watching a World War 2 era opera. On Tuesday, October 8, the Connecticut Lyric Opera presented, “Der Kaiser von Atlantis,” a German opera, written by Vikto Ullman with the libretto by Peter Kien.

Dance Faculty Earns Distinguished Achievement
An artist instructor from the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Half Day has been recognized by Connecticut Dance Alliance for her contributions to teaching and performing in the state of Connecticut! Core dance faculty Jeanne Giroir is the latest to be recipient of the “Distinguished Achievement Award.” Every year, the CDA acknowledges someone who has made outstanding contributions in teaching, performing, and promoting dance and who has had a profound effect on the Connecticut Dance scene.

GHAA Take Part in Breakdancing Shakespeare
Three students from The Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Half Day are performers in this summer’s Hartford Stage’s production of Breakdancing Shakespeare. Every summer, the Greater Hartford Arts Council selects high school students within the region to spend a six week period rehearsing, taking master classes as well as learn interviewing, networking, and resume skills.
